Elliott Heffernan

Biography

Early Life and Origins

Elliott Heffernan grew up in Bedfordshire, England . He has two sisters . Before beginning his acting career, Elliott had a normal childhood. His first and most important stage experience came in a school play. He played the Genie in a school production of "Aladdin" . This performance caught the attention of his teacher, who recognized his acting talent. The teacher approached Elliott's mother and told her that this child should pursue an acting career immediately .

Climbing the Career Ladder: Breakthrough with Blitz

Elliott Heffernan's entry into the film world is an unusual and inspiring story. In 2021, when he was just 8 years old, his mother saw an open casting call on Facebook for Steve McQueen's new film "Blitz" . Despite having no professional acting experience, Elliott applied based solely on his school play performance. He prepared a self-tape audition, and the process began. After months of callbacks and eliminations, Elliott managed to impress Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen. McQueen said of him: "I was looking for a child actor who would capture the innocence of childhood, the family's love and bond, as well as the immense emotional journey he endures as he makes his way back home through many terrifying experiences. I didn't know if he existed and then I discovered Elliott" . Casting director Nina Gold noted that Elliott was able to portray George's complex inner landscape—feelings of betrayal, anger, and fear—"with minimal dialogue, yet with great subtlety and depth" . When Elliott learned he got the role, he was celebrating his sister's birthday with his family. He humorously recounts finding out by "stealing the spotlight from his sister on her birthday" .

Blitz (2024): A Historic Debut Film

"Blitz" is an epic war drama about the German bombing of London during World War II (The Blitz) . In the film, Elliott plays George Hanaway, the son of Rita, portrayed by Saoirse Ronan . George is a child from a mixed-race family who is put on a train by his mother to be evacuated to the English countryside for safety. However, George jumps off the train and embarks on a dangerous journey back to London to find his mother . The film opened the London Film Festival and closed the New York Film Festival in 2024 . Elliott's performance received unanimous critical acclaim: The New Yorker called him "gravely captivating" and able to wrap "each expression and gesture around a hard little nubbin of distrust" . The Independent wrote that the revelations of the film were "communicated with such grace through Heffernan's performance" . The Daily Telegraph described it as "a wonderful performance that's by turns clear and enigmatic" .

Unique Preparation and Stunt Experience

Elliott delivered an incredible physical performance in his first film. Filming began in 2022 and continued into 2023 . He performed most of his own stunts : Underwater scene: In the scene where an underground station floods, he personally acted in a water tank. It took several days to warm the water, and he was put in a wetsuit for the shoot . Height scene: For a scene that was later cut from the final film, he was winched 50 feet into the air . Crying scene: When he first needed to cry on demand, he struggled. With director Steve McQueen's encouragement—"Come on, George, you can do it!"—he managed to capture the emotion and cry .

Relationship with Saoirse Ronan

Elliott formed a special bond with Saoirse Ronan, who played his mother in the film. Ronan was like a mother to him on set . They gave each other nicknames: Elliott called her "Smirshma," and Ronan called him "Shmelliot" . Ronan's most important advice to him was: "Don't be embarrassed, and make sure you have fun" . Since Ronan herself started acting as a child, she understood Elliott's experiences well and guided him through the process .
