Jack Black

Biography

Early Life and Origins

Jack Black was born into a family of satellite engineers. His father, Thomas William Black, and mother, Judith Love Cohen, both worked as rocket scientists. His mother worked on the Minuteman nuclear missile guidance system, the Apollo lunar module guidance system, and the science ground station for the Hubble Space Telescope . Black humorously stated: "They're rocket scientists. I'm a rock scientist" . His mother was born Jewish to a family from Poland and Russia. His father, of German, English, Irish, and Scottish descent, converted to Judaism . Black was raised Jewish, attended Hebrew school, and had a Bar Mitzvah . Black's parents divorced when he was 10, which deeply affected him and left him seeking attention . He moved to Culver City with his father and frequently visited his mother . For high school, he attended the Poseidon School, a private school for students struggling in the traditional system, and later Crossroads School, where he excelled in drama . He then attended UCLA but dropped out during his second year to pursue a career in entertainment .

Early Acting Career

Black's first acting job was a television commercial for the video game Pitfall! at age 13 in 1982 . This experience fueled his acting passion: "I knew that if my friends saw me on TV, it would be the answer to all my prayers... And I was awesome—for three days. Then it wore off. But it gave me the hunger" . In 1987, he joined the Actors' Gang, a theater troupe founded by UCLA students including Tim Robbins . There he met Kyle Gass, with whom he would later form Tenacious D, and John Cusack, with whom he would frequently collaborate . He made his feature film debut in Tim Robbins' "Bob Roberts" (1992) . Throughout the 1990s, he appeared in small roles in films such as "Airborne" (1993), "Demolition Man" (1993), "Waterworld" (1995), "Dead Man Walking" (1995), "The Cable Guy" (1996), "The Fan" (1996), "Mars Attacks!" (1996), "The Jackal" (1997), and "Enemy of the State" (1998) . He also had recurring roles on the HBO sketch comedy series "Mr. Show with Bob and David" (1995-96) .

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

The year 2000 marked a turning point in Black's career. In "High Fidelity," starring alongside John Cusack, he played the energetic and pretentious record store clerk Barry Judd . Black considers this role his breakthrough into the Hollywood scene . His climactic scene performing Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" showcased his vocal abilities . Following this breakthrough, he quickly landed leading roles: "Saving Silverman" (2001), the Farrelly brothers comedy "Shallow Hal" (2001) opposite Gwyneth Paltrow, and "Orange County" (2002) . The 2003 film "School of Rock" made him a true superstar. The film was written specifically for Black by screenwriter Mike White, who was his neighbor at the time . The story of an unemployed rocker posing as a substitute teacher perfectly captured Black's energy and musical talent. The performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy and an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance . In 2004, he appeared with Ben Stiller in "Envy" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" .

Dramatic Role and Action Ventures

In 2005, he took on a dramatic role as ambitious filmmaker Carl Denham in Peter Jackson's epic "King Kong" . He based his performance on Orson Welles . 2006 saw him in three major films: the wrestling comedy "Nacho Libre" (again collaborating with Mike White), the romantic comedy "The Holiday" with Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, and Jude Law, and the Tenacious D film "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" . In 2007, he appeared in Noah Baumbach's "Margot at the Wedding" alongside Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh .

This became one of his favorite roles, and he praised the tutoring of his two-time Oscar-winning co-star Dustin Hoffman . The film's success led to sequels: "Kung Fu Panda 2" (2011), "Kung Fu Panda 3" (2016), and "Kung Fu Panda 4" (2024) . The same year, he starred in "Tropic Thunder" with Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr., and "Be Kind Rewind" with Mos Def, directed by Michel Gondry . Stine in the adaptation "Goosebumps" . The same year, he starred in the HBO comedy series "The Brink" with Tim Robbins . 2017 brought "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," starring alongside Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan as Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon, the avatar of a high school student trapped in a video game .
