Jamie Foxx

Biography

Early Life and Origins

Jamie Foxx was born in the small Texas town of Terrell. Shortly after his birth, his parents Darrell Bishop and Louise Annette Talley Dixon divorced, and he was adopted and raised by his mother's adoptive parents, Estelle Marie Nelson and Mark Talley . His grandmother worked as a domestic worker and nursery operator, while his grandfather was a yard worker . Foxx had little contact with his biological parents and often credits his grandmother's influence as one of the greatest reasons for his success . He grew up in the black quarter of Terrell, which at the time was a racially segregated community . His introduction to music came at an early age. He began playing the piano when he was five years old . He had a strict Baptist upbringing and as a teenager was a part-time pianist and choir leader at Terrell's New Hope Baptist Church . His natural talent for comedy was evident as early as third grade; his teacher would use him as a reward—if the class behaved well, Foxx would tell them jokes . At Terrell High School, he played both basketball and football. As the school's quarterback, he was the first player in the school's history to pass for more than 1,000 yards . His dream at that time was to play for the famous Dallas Cowboys football team . He also sang in a band called Leather and Lace . After high school, he earned a scholarship to United States International University in San Diego (now Alliant International University), where he studied musical and performing arts composition .

Career Turning Point: Transition to Comedy

One night in 1989, on a dare from a girlfriend, he participated in an open mic night at a comedy club in Los Angeles . Noticing that female comedians were often called to perform first, he chose an androgynous name to gain an advantage. He took the surname of his favorite black comedian, Redd Foxx, and chose the unisex name "Jamie," thus adopting the name Jamie Foxx . His improvisational performance that night was a huge success, and the experience convinced him to try his luck in Hollywood .

Television Years and Breakthrough

In 1991, he joined the cast of the famous sketch comedy show "In Living Color," working alongside Jim Carrey . His memorable character Wanda on the show brought him recognition in the television world . He then had a recurring role on the comedy-drama series "Roc" . From 1996 to 2001, through his production company Foxx Hole Productions, he starred in, co-created, and wrote his own sitcom, "The Jamie Foxx Show," which aired on The WB network for five highly-rated seasons .

Film Career: From Comedy to Drama

He made his film debut in 1992 with "Toys," starring alongside Robin Williams . Throughout the 1990s, he appeared mostly in comedy films, including "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" (1996), "Booty Call" (1997), "The Players Club" (1998), and "Held Up" (1999) . Oliver Stone's 1999 film "Any Given Sunday" was a turning point in his career . Thanks to his own football background, he portrayed Willie Beamen, an ego-driven and troubled quarterback, showcasing his dramatic abilities for the first time . This performance opened the door to more serious roles. In 2001, in Michael Mann's "Ali," he played Drew "Bundini" Brown, Muhammad Ali's close friend and cornerman . His performance in this film, alongside Will Smith, caught director Michael Mann's attention.

2004: Historic Year and Oscar Glory

2004 was the year Jamie Foxx achieved unprecedented success, being nominated for two Oscars in the same year for two different films. "Collateral": In this thriller directed by Michael Mann, he starred alongside Tom Cruise as Max Durocher, an ordinary taxi driver, earning critical acclaim . Roger Ebert called his performance "a revelation" . This role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor . "Ray": In this biographical film directed by Taylor Hackford, he portrayed legendary musician Ray Charles. Foxx kept his eyes completely closed throughout the film, perfectly mimicking Charles's mannerisms, gestures, and piano-playing style . This performance won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, the Golden Globe (Best Actor - Musical/Comedy), and the BAFTA Award . Foxx became the third male actor after Barry Fitzgerald and Al Pacino to receive two Oscar nominations in the same year for two different films . That same year, he was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the television film "Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story" .

Music Career: Grammy and Chart Success

Foxx's music career has been as successful as his acting career. Although his debut album "Peep This" (1994) failed to achieve commercial success , his music career was revived in the 2000s. The second single, "Blame It" (featuring T-Pain), reached the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a number 1 hit on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart .
