The Kingdom of Abraxeon is under siege by the Dreadites, heralds of the long-dead sorcerer Nekromemnon . A powerful swordsman known as Deathstalker (Daniel Bernhardt) recovers a cursed amulet from a corpse-strewn battlefield . Marked by this dark magic, he is immediately hunted by monstrous assassins. To survive, he must break the curse and face the rising evil. On his epic quest, he is aided by new allies, including the voice of the benevolent wizard Doodad (Patton Oswalt) .
Is it possible to recapture the distinct 'cheap but fun' vibe of 1980s sword-and-sorcery films with a modern visual twist? Steven Kostanski (Psycho Goreman, The Void) seems to have pulled it off. The film stars action veteran Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick), but there's an unexpected name in the background: Guns N' Roses' legendary guitarist Slash serves as an executive producer and has co-written an original song for the film with composer Bear McCreary . Will this reboot, in the hands of a horror-comedy master, lean into the unintentional humor of the originals or become a sincere, action-packed homage? The emphasis on practical effects and the casting of Patton Oswalt as the voice of a wizard named 'Doodad' suggests the latter . If you're looking for a gory, fun-filled fantasy adventure that pays tribute to the classics, Deathstalker is the one for you.
