Man-su (Lee Byung-hun), a man who considered himself to have "achieved everything" after working at a paper mill for 25 years, is suddenly and unexpectedly laid off. Dismissed with the words "we have no other choice," he quickly faces the harsh reality of unemployment. After a year passes without finding new work, he finds himself hauling boxes in a warehouse, unable to pay the mortgage. His wife Mi-ri (Son Ye-jin) starts working as a dental assistant; the family tightens their belts, the dogs are temporarily rehomed, and even their Netflix subscription is canceled. In his desperation, Man-su decides to systematically eliminate the competition standing in his way. Armed with his father's North Korean-made revolver, he embarks on a bloody path to become the "most suitable candidate." However, Man-su is less a calculated killer and more like Mr. Bean attempting to play an assassin .
Park Chan-wook's passion project, developed over 17 years and described as the film he 'most wanted to make,' is finally here! It also marks the first time Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin star as a married couple . This film hits the same societal nerve as Parasite but with a much darker sense of humor. What happens when an unemployed man decides to kill his competitors to save his life... but is utterly incompetent at it? Screened in Venice, Toronto, and New York, and boasting a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this film has audiences both roaring with laughter and deeply unsettled . Park Chan-wook's signature visual perfection and black comedy reach their peak in Man-su's amateurish murder attempts . And what about that darkly satirical coda nodding to the rise of AI? This film is more than a story about unemployment; it's a warning about how dark every moment we say 'I have no other choice' can become. It asks: 'When the time comes, won't you be the one holding the North Korean-made revolver?
