College student Lucy returns to her family home in Hawaii after years away, accompanied by her friends Kate, Nick, and Kate's uninvited guest, Hannah. Her father Adam is a famous deaf author, and her little sister Erin feels abandoned by Lucy's absence. The family also has Ben, an exceptionally intelligent chimpanzee raised by their late mother, a linguist, who communicates via a tablet. Everything changes when Ben is bitten by a rabid mongoose that enters his enclosure. After their father leaves for a book signing, Ben becomes increasingly violent. Soon, the house becomes a bloody hunting ground, trapping the young people by the edge of the pool.
Remember those horrifying 2009 news reports about Travis the chimpanzee mauling a woman's face? Primate brings that real-life nightmare to the screen . But this time, the victims aren't random; Ben is a chimpanzee raised by a linguist, trained in sign language, who transforms from a family member into a monster after contracting rabies. Director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) pays homage to 80s slasher films while squeezing every last drop of tension and gore . What about the moments when a deaf father can't hear his daughter's screams? Or how trust in a pet can turn into a nightmare? Critics say the human characters are too generic , but perhaps the real horror lies in the fact that even a beloved pet can spiral out of control. With a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score and nearly $40 million at the box office , this film might just make you think twice the next time you watch a cute chimp video.
