“Sometimes, getting lost is the only way to be found.”
Matthieu is a withdrawn man in his forties, long unemployed and working as a school janitor to get by. Marc is another forty-something, outwardly successful with his own company supplying equipment to law enforcement, but privately grappling with a crisis in his marriage and business. Their paths cross when Matthieu's clumsy theft attempt damages Marc's car. Feeling responsible, Matthieu offers to help Marc compensate for the loss. This unexpected incident brings the two contrasting characters together on a road trip to sell Marc's remaining stock. Along the way, a friendship begins to blossom, centered on their disappointments, regrets, and the small hopes they hold for life.
Two strangers crossing paths when nothing seems to be going right in the second half of life... Formidable (alternatively titled Lollypop Men) tells this familiar yet always touching story within the calm and realistic atmosphere of Belgium. Can this reluctant friendship, born from a failed theft, restore the lost hope of two disillusioned men? The film avoids grand gestures, sincerely portraying humanity, solidarity, and the effort to hold onto life in small moments. This quiet story, brought to life by the natural performances of Stéphane De Groodt and Serge Larivière, might just whisper its biggest question to the viewer: 'Is what's truly 'formidable' great success, or is it the touch of a friend's hand on your shoulder?
