Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a selfish and ambitious young car dealer in Los Angeles, learns that his estranged father has died. He is shocked to discover that his father left him only a classic Buick and rose bushes, while his $3 million fortune is bequeathed to an unknown trustee. Investigating further, he finds out the trustee is a brother he never knew he had: Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), an autistic savant living in a mental institution. Motivated by the prospect of gaining control of the inheritance, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility and takes him on a cross-country road trip to Los Angeles. This forced journey unexpectedly opens doors in the lives of these two polar-opposite brothers, forcing Charlie to question his priorities and his very understanding of family.
What kind of bond can exist between brothers when one grows up unaware of the other's existence? Especially when one is a selfish, ambitious salesman and the other is a savant who perceives the world through his own unique rules? 'Rain Man' answers this question in the form of an unforgettable road movie. Dustin Hoffman's Oscar-winning portrayal of Raymond transcends character acting to become an indelible portrait in cinema history . Tom Cruise, in perhaps one of his most human and layered roles, makes Charlie's transformation from selfishness to love so convincing that you change right along with him . Think of the moment Raymond sings 'Iko Iko,' or the scene where Charlie tries to teach him to dance at the mall... These moments are not just funny; they are the purest forms of a bridge being built between two completely different worlds. Barry Levinson's masterpiece, which explores the complexity of human relationships and the unconditional power of brotherhood without ever resorting to melodrama, fully deserved its four Oscars, including Best Picture . If you want to get lost in a road trip story and witness how two strangers become brothers, 'Rain Man' is waiting for you.
