When his leg braces break while fleeing bullies, Forrest discovers he can run incredibly fast, earning a football scholarship to the University of Alabama and meeting President Kennedy . After college, Forrest joins the Army and befriends Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue (Mykelti Williamson) in basic training, promising to go into the shrimping business together after the war . In Vietnam, their platoon is ambushed; Bubba is killed and their commanding officer, Lieutenant Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise), loses both legs. Forrest rescues several soldiers and receives the Medal of Honor . While recovering, he discovers a talent for ping-pong, eventually competing in China and appearing on television with John Lennon . Discharged from the army, Forrest fulfills his promise by buying a shrimping boat, with Lieutenant Dan eventually joining him. After their boat survives a hurricane, they strike it rich, creating the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company . Throughout the years, Forrest intermittently reunites with Jenny (Robin Wright), who struggles with a self-destructive path stemming from childhood trauma. He proposes, but she declines. After running across the country for over three years, Forrest returns home to find Jenny has a son, Forrest Jr. Jenny, now ill, marries Forrest before her death. The film ends with Forrest sending his son off on his first day of school, continuing the cycle of life .
