Frank Zito (Elijah Wood) owns a small store in Los Angeles restoring antique mannequins. Haunted by a traumatic childhood dominated by his abusive mother, a prostitute, Frank struggles with deep-seated rage and violent urges . By night, he transforms into a serial killer, stalking, murdering, and scalping young women, bringing his grisly trophies home to adorn the mannequins he keeps in his apartment . Frank's bleak existence is disrupted when Anna (Nora Arnezeder), a photographer, enters his shop. Fascinated by his work with mannequins, she proposes collaborating on an art exhibition . A fragile friendship develops between them, and Frank desperately tries to suppress his murderous impulses, fearing the loss of the only person who has ever shown him kindness. However, the ghosts of his past and the violence within him continue to pull him towards an inevitable and tragic fate .
What if you were forced to see the world through the eyes of a killer? Franck Khalfoun's Maniac offers precisely this unsettling experience. Shot almost entirely from the killer's first-person point of view, the film traps the audience in the dark labyrinth of Frank's mind, forcing us to stalk, breathe, and witness his horrific acts alongside him . Elijah Wood's performance, which shatters his 'Frodo' image, amplifies the impact of this psychological violence . You'll find yourself caught in a dilemma, simultaneously sharing his most intimate moments and recoiling from the brutality he commits. Furthermore, Rob's (Robin Coudert) synth score, reminiscent of John Carpenter's work, intensifies the film's homage to 80s slasher aesthetics . Can Anna's friendship stop the monster within Frank, or will she become part of his grisly collection? The answer will pin you to your seat and make it hard to escape the film's dark world.
